Brand overview
Originally a secret supplier of precision instruments to the Italian Navy, Panerai is today a symbol of bold design and sporting luxury. Its watches, characterised by imposing cases and high-legibility 'sandwich' dials, have created the phenomenon of the 'Paneristi' — one of the most active collector communities in the world.
Founded by Giovanni Panerai, the Florentine workshop soon became the official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy. During the Second World War, Panerai watches (often equipped with Rolex movements) were classified military instruments protected by state secrecy. The transition to the civilian market took place only in 1993, but the true global explosion came after the acquisition by the Richemont Group in 1997 and the endorsement of Sylvester Stallone. Panerai has maintained its aesthetic DNA (cushion case, crown-protecting bridge) while evolving technically through the creation of in-house movements in Neuchâtel and the use of innovative materials such as Carbotech and BMG-TECH.
Iconic models and lines
- Luminor (1950-present) — Famous for the iconic patented crown-protecting bridge.
- Radiomir (1936-present) — The original design without the crown protector, inspired by the first combat divers.
What collectors watch for
- 'Pre-Vendome' models (1993-1997)
- Vintage references with 'tropical' dials
- Limited editions with historic logos (e.g. SLC)
- Period movements (Rolex/Angelus)
Curiosities
- The Radiomir took its name from radium, which was highly radioactive and was later replaced by Luminor (tritium).
- Vintage Panerai models were so large (47mm) because they needed to be readable over a diver's wetsuit.
- Panerai opened its first historic boutique in Florence, opposite the Baptistery.
Frequently asked questions
What makes the 'Sandwich' dial special?
It is made of two stacked plates: the lower one contains the luminescent compound, while the upper one has cut-out indices, ensuring exceptional luminosity.
Why do many Panerai watches have the crown on the left?
The 'Destro' models were created for military divers who needed to wear other instruments (compass or depth gauge) on their left wrist.
What does the 'OP' logo mean?
It stands for 'Officine Panerai' and features two arrows pointing upward (sky) and downward (sea) — the two historic domains of the brand.
Are modern Panerai watches still diving instruments?
Yes, the Submersible collections are certified professional instruments with water resistance of up to 300 metres and beyond.
